“The Other Advent” campaign starts with a digital church service

The Christian association Other Times is opening its “The Other Advent” campaign for the 30th time with a digital service on the topic of “drawing strength”. The recorded celebration can be seen on YouTube from November 30th at 6 p.m., as the club announced on Friday in Hamburg.

At the same time, an in-person service will take place in the St. Pauli Church in Hamburg. “We believe that many people could use some reinforcement in these uncertain and confusing times,” explained Andere-Zeiten editor-in-chief Iris Macke.

Over 600,000 Advent calendars sent

The Hamburg association is close to the Christian churches and became known nationwide primarily through its calendar “The Other Advent”. It appeared for the first time in 1995 and offers an image and a text for reflection every day from the eve of the first Advent until Epiphany on January 6th.

According to the association, over 600,000 copies of the calendar have already been sent out this year. The Advent campaign also included an internet forum in which readers could exchange ideas and network about the Advent calendar, but also about other topics. It opens November 30th. To mark the 30th anniversary of the calendar, the editorial team is also celebrating a “Other Times Evening” at 30 locations throughout Germany.

For Christians, Advent is the time of preparation for Christmas. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. The word comes from the Latin “adventus” and means “arrival”. What is meant is the arrival of Jesus on earth.

In the services on Advent Sundays, texts from the Old Testament that prophesy the arrival of the Savior are often used. The four candles of the Advent wreath, which is a more recent tradition, symbolize the coming of the “light of the world”. The branches of evergreen fir trees represent eternal life.
