MORE ABOUT THE REGIONALLIGA WEST

KFC Uerdingen recently remained without a three-pointer for five games in a row, and the relegation places were once again threateningly close. Above all, the recent 1:2 against MSV Duisburg, who were given a big fight in the sold-out Grotenburg for a long time, still made the promoted team optimistic about the end of the year. With SC Wiedenbrück, an opponent with a similar collar size is now waiting at the end of the first half of the season. The SCW had been deep in the relegation battle for months, but was made to sit up and take notice last week when they brought title contenders Fortuna Cologne to their knees 1:3.

Aluminum bad luck for KFC – Badjie forgives on the other side

In icy temperatures, with numerous frost spots visible on the deep and difficult-to-play pitch of the Jahnstadion, Uerdingen got off to a better start and looked for a way forward. Wiedenbrück was initially busy with defensive work. In the 20th minute the lead was in the air for the guests, but Al Ghaddioui only hit the crossbar from a few meters – luck for the SCW. As a result, the KFC, whose counter-pressing also worked well when the ball was lost, continued to combine dangerously in the final third.

In the 38th minute, an individual mistake on the other side would have been quickly punished. Langer made a bad pass in the build-up game, Badjie ran towards the goal alone, but was unable to take advantage of this huge opportunity. Since Osawe missed the last good opportunity of the first half shortly before the break, the score remained 0-0 at the break.

Al Ghaddioui redeems the KFC

After the break, the 429 spectators saw a similar picture. The KFC had the better playing system, Uerdingen threw themselves into every ball in their own half. In the 65th minute, the aluminum again stood in the way of Uerdingen’s lead. Ramusovic slammed the ball onto the right post from around 30 meters. When Ciccarelli missed the next good chance in the 66th minute, Uerdingen seemed close to despair. In the 67th minute, redemption came with the third big chance within a few minutes: Stappmann played a nice long ball to Klump. Al Ghaddioui put his cross in the goal to take the deserved lead.

Wiedenbrück, who hardly appeared offensively in the second half, had nothing left to counter the setback. Instead, the KFC, who offered an extremely convincing performance, sniffed the preliminary decision several times, for example through Cicarelli, whose shot was cleared off the line (83′). In the end it was a well-deserved 1-0 win, with which Uerdingen not only got back on the road to success, but also restored its healthy cushion over the relegation zone.
